Join us later in May for our second Surfers Against Sewage Paddle Out Protest. Last year we demanded reform of the water sector and are disappointed to still be seeing numerous sewage pollution alerts in Seaford bay. This year the government is debating a new Water Bill but so far the bill does not stack up well against the demands of Surfers Against Sewage. Our privatised water system is broken. Sewage pollution is making people sick, destroying livelihoods, and wrecking our environment. Whilst bills rise, water companies have extracted billions in dividends and failed to invest in the system, creating a public health and environmental crisis.

Bathing sites across the country are being deemed as too costly to regulate and year round water users are feeling left out as water quality is only monitored during the peak season, starting in May. Whilst bathing water status is aimed at making waters safer for swimmers where does this leave other water users such as kayakers, paddleboarders, surfers and year round swimmers?

With a Water Bill on the horizon, we have a once in a generation opportunity for change yet the Government is pushing through legislation without considering the alternatives, trapping us in the privatised system where pollution pays and the public gets sick.

Private companies cannot and will not prioritise public health, or the environment over profit. Public health must come first – profit from sewage pollution must end. The Government must end the current privatised water industry.

The time to act is now. We are coming together to raise our voices for change so whether you want to stick to the shore, paddle, swim, row or just add your voice please come along on Saturday 16th May. We will also have beach clean kit available from 10am. Check our website events page and facebook event page for more details coming soon.
