So pleased to say we have finally reached a crucial stage in applying for a memorial to Plastic Free Seaford Founder and SAS Regional Rep Claire here in Seaford. We need town councillors to write to the Town Clerk in support of the request before the next full council meeting in March. Here’s where you come in! Please please write to your town councillors asking them to support this request by emailing the Interim Town Clerk.
If you are not sure who that is have a look here https://www.seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk/councillor-contact-details/

The memorial (designed by Richard Dean) will:

  • contain Claire’s parting words (“burn bright, fight my fight, don’t extinguish my light”)
  • include the Surfers Against Sewage and Plastic Free Seaford logos
  • be made of durable and sustainable materials e.g. marine grade stainless steel
  • require no regular maintenance and care (it will however need to be insured under the Town Council’s assets and public liability insurance policies)
  • be secured with bolts and have no sharp edges or loose parts
See below for an example of what to say in your letter:
Dear Cllr________
I am writing to ask for your support in requesting a memorial to founder of Plastic Free Seaford Claire Sumners who passed away nearly 3 years ago and leaves an important legacy for the town. Thanks to her dedication and many hours volunteering Seaford was awarded Plastic Free Community status in 2020, a goal that Seaford Town Council pledged to support in 2018.
Hopefully you are aware that this memorial is fully funded and the design has passed safety inspection.
The STC website states that “Seaford holds a special place in many people’s memories” but it is our belief that Claire’s memory should have a special place in Seaford because of all that she contributed.

Please let me know whether you would be happy to write to the Interim Town Clerk in support of this request. I would appreciate emails be sent by 7th March ahead of the next full council meeting due on the 27th March 2025. Please do copy me and plasticfreeseaford.community@gmail.com into your email.
